Skin lightening creams, also known as skin bleaching creams, skin brightening creams, whiteners or fade, performs their activity on the skin by decreasing the amount of the skin pigment called melanin. The people who are usually using these skin brightening products would be those people who want to become fairer in their skin complexion, those who have age spots and acne scars, or those who have skin discolorations due to the effect of hormones such as the melasma during pregnancy.
There are a lot of skin brightening products in the market but before you would choose one product to make your skin brighter and lighter in color, one should first know the basic information about this type of product since misuse and misinformation would usually result to consequences and problems later one.
What Dictates Skin Color?
As what was mentioned earlier, the skin has a natural pigment called melanin which is a brown-colored pigment of the skin. The more melanin that your skin might have would be the darker the skin complexion a person may become thus the skin brightening products would usually try to block the production of melanin in order to prevent the skin from turning darker in color.
Depending on a person’s genetic make-up would also depend on the natural skin color that he/she may have. Thus some people who have a lot of melanin in their cells would have a difficulty in brightening their skin while those who do not have much melanin would also have difficulty in producing a tan-colored skin.
One method of brightening the skin would be due to skin bleaching. This simple method would need a person to apply the bleaching cream on the certain body parts where there is age spots or skin discolorations. The aim of skin bleaching is to even out the color of the skin thus many women would usually put the skin bleaching cream all over the body in order to attain an even and fairer complexion.
But since the active ingredient in bleaching creams would be mercury, excessive applications of this cream could result to mercury poisoning.
Action of Skin Lighteners
Unlike the skin bleaching creams, skin brightening products do not contain mercury and this is important to note in those women who would like to brighten their skin as they may interchange these two almost similar sounding terms. The active ingredient found in skin brightening products would be hydroquinone.
The skin brightening products that can be bought over the counter would usually contain as much as 2% hydroquinone but skin experts such as the dermatologists could prescribe skin brightening products that may contain around 4% hydroquinone. Since there are associated risks and important instructions on how to apply these products that contain hydroquinone safely, it would be much safer if you purchase products that would be prescribed by the dermatologists.
Some skin brighteners would also contain derivatives of Vitamin A such as the retinoic since this will promote the rapid cell turnover of the skin cells and eventually leading to a healthy and fairer skin.
